The Houston Astros are expected to turn to a new face Friday night as they search for healthy options for their short-handed pitching staff. Jake Bloss will be the latest beneficiary of Houston’s midseason scramble.
Bloss, a third-round pick in the 2023 MLB draft, will toe the rubber at Minute Maid Park after a rather rapid ascent through the minor leagues, according to The Athletic’s [Chandler Rome and Ken Rosenthal](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5578523/2024/06/20/astros-jake-bloss-mlb-debut/). The 22-year-old right-hander sports a 1.74 ERA across 62 innings this season, splitting time between High-A Asheville and Double-A Corpus Christi. He’s allowed just two earned runs in his last four starts, and a paltry .207 opponent slugging percentage underscores Bloss’ dominance of late. The Georgetown product is generating plenty of whiffs with a high-velocity fastball. He’s also avoiding hard contact, pairing his heater with a strong curveball and an improving change-up.
He will become the third pitcher from the 2023 MLB draft to be called up this season, after Paul Skenes and Hurston Waldrep.
