Very curious what his market is going to be like. He’s very good but he’s also making the jump in his mid-30s and isn’t a strikeout pitcher.

Resident NPB ball knowers of /r/baseball, tell us what we all need to know about this guy from someone who actually watches his games

Pretty neat actually he tries for MLB, not all NPB teams are open to posting their players to MLB so a number of their players needs to gain international FA status instead. I still recall how pretty good Sugano was facing Team USA during the 2017 World Baseball Classic at Dodgers Stadium in the semi-finals being Japan’s starting pitcher that time, he’s 34 years old now but I think he can still be good for about 2-3 years in MLB with his 2024 NPB pitching stats being 1.67 ERA in 24 games played (15-3 record) in 156.2 IP with a 111/16 SO to BB ratio this year.

The low strikeout numbers has him pitch to contact in the weaker offensive NPB league. Seems like a fringe 5th rotation starter. He’s also like 35. There was some hype in 2020 when he posted but no one really bit.

There’s a lot of fringe MLB talent in NPB. Posted pitchers need to have a Sawamura award or be in the top 4-5 pitchers to be taken seriously. NPB is AAAA and the top talent is worthy but the league has no depth.

so … no posting fee involved is that correct ?

If he gets signed, he’ll be the 4th player to go to MLB from the 2012 NPB draft class joining Ohtani, Fujinami, and Seiya Suzuki.

He’s also be five years older than all of them since he was drafted out of college and skipped the 2011 draft to avoid getting drafted by the Fighters.

Rockies can give him an early retirement! We’ll get that ERA to around AT LEAST 4.50

  8. From the very few things I read about him, his pitching style kinda sounds like Seth Lugo, low velo fastball but a 6-pitch mix he can tunnel really well. But would also be interested what people with real NPB knowledge think about him

He will need to work on his fastball this offseason then. MLB hitters will mash his current fastball with no movement, velocity or pinpoint accuracy.

Be interesting to see how he does in MLB. He is already 35!

Can’t wait for the “how about he Sugano dick” jokes
