Avec des coureurs en 1ère et 2ème base et 1 retrait, Devers envoie la balle dans le champ intérieur et Tyler O’Neill est retiré pour interférence en 1ère base pour sortir les Mariners de la 7ème manche

In a tie game, especially in the last third of the game, this is an insanely preventable mistake to make

The dramatics from the manager were pretty funny after how blatant that was

Don’t understand why it’s interference when he wasn’t even the closest guy to the ball (or catch the ball) but whatever
Edit: lmao classic Reddit. Literally say “I don’t understand” and instead of an explanation I just get downvoted 😂

People are going to be fucking seething, but this is absolutely by the book.

Am I correct in thinking that if the infield fly rule had been invoked, it would not have mattered at all? And that this is exactly the sort of scenario it was made for?
It does seem like interference, but wouldn’t interference not matter for the infield fly rule? Doesn’t matter if the infielder ultimately catches it or not.
EDIT: After reading the letter of the law I think I understand it. Gotta love when uncommon baseball rules collide.

I’m listening to the radio and they couldn’t believe what they were looking at, and seeing this it’s every bit as baffling as they said. It’s like O’Neill’s brain just shorted out and he didn’t even see where he was going, just tried to plow right through whatever was in front of him.

Bad play by O’Neill but logically makes no sense whatsoever that u can interfere with a catch that is already given out regardless of it being caught due to the infield fly rule
In that case what’s the downside to a fielder trying to “foul bait” a call anytime this situation happens since it’s gonna be called out on the catch no matter what

Is this the third infield fly->runner interference double play of the season?
Redbubble89
A runner is out when… He fails to avoid a fielder who is attempting to field a batted ball, or intentionally interferes with a thrown ball, provided that if two or more fielders attempt to field a batted ball, and the runner comes in contact with one or more of them, the umpire shall determine which fielder is entitled to the benefit of this rule, and **shall not declare the runner out for coming in contact with a fielder other than the one the umpire determines to be entitled to field such a ball**.

Bro why is this happening every few weeks now lol

The dude has been on the Mariners for two games and is making an impact. That’s a play only a vet makes. Knew the rules and took advantage of it.

This play hadn’t happened in 15 years before this season, now it’s happened 3 times in this season!
