If you can’t beat them with your pitching, block they ass.

Don’t ask me to explain my inconsistent reasoning as to why I absolutely love this play, but absolutely hated the Machado baserunning play

Does a base runner automatically get the next base on Type B Obstruction?
obvison
Easy call, textbook interference. The rule for getting the next base is also written in stone.
Unfortunate for the pitcher, I think he’s just built in the muscle memory of covering first. He probably doesn’t cover first on a ball to the outfield very often.

The obstruction call I can understand, but not second.
That was Type 2 Obstruction (obstruction not on an active play), which _can_ grant you a base at umpire’s discretion, but it _also_ doesn’t guarantee that he should be called safe later in the play. It just gives the umpire discretion to basically protect the runner to any result they would have naturally come to if the obstruction hadn’t happened.
So if he kept going to 2nd and he was tagged out _because_ the obstruction stopped him, he would be safe. But it doesn’t grant him the ability to automatically jog over to 2nd. (or not get caught in no-man’s-land.
That being said, even when I umpired kids, that was always called very-generously to the runner. But it’s not absolute protection.

I can predict the future: This will be the topic of a video at https://www.youtube.com/@CloseCallSports tomorrow which begins with a complaint about the commentators saying « interference » instead of « obstruction. »
