So Mets heading to WS but still lose to a team from AL if trend is followed?

  2. StayElmo7

That’s because the Dodgers are constantly the free win.

This doesn’t look like it’s best for baseball

maybe the top seeds should fucking play better or not have dave roberts as a manager, or spend 2 billion in the offseason instead of only 1.1 billion. i mean you gotta WANT it.

Almost all of it is due to the Braves (2-6) and Dodgers (2-8)

Edit : FYI , the AL bye teams are 11-8 and have 3 (so far) series wins

I still don’t subscribe to the belief that having a bye is bad. Going into this series our pitching was extremely overworked and we had a bullpen game vs wheeler game 1

I’m sure the teams that got eliminated in the WC round wish they had a bye.

I don’t mind the chaos! Would’ve been fun to have « what ifs » for playoffs series dating back decades with this format.

  9. fk_the_braves

Even if there’s any disadvantage the probability for them to advance is still higher.
Anyone bitching about this should go and ask Brewers, Astros, Braves, and Orioles if they want a bye or not.

And AL teams with byes have been 3-1 in the division series. Total record is 3-5 for bye teams. Other than further evidence that everyone already knows about baseball playoffs being a crapshoot, not sure what this stat adds.

  11. The Dodgers pitching staff fills up an entire ward at Cedars-Sinai. If they lose this year, rust is not to blame.

  12. CosmicLars

The BYE has nothing to do with why the Dodgers are struggling. Injuries to their SP is.

Didn’t the Astros literally win a WS under this format with a week 1 bye?

Also, the Orioles were swept last year and they had a week 1 bye. This year they were a WC team and got swept.

I dislike blaming the playoff format.

Speaking of last year again, the Astros had a week 1 bye same as 2022 and were up 3-2 in the ALCS against us. They very well could have won the WS and gone back to back years under this playoff format.

No matter the format, all the teams are good in the playoffs and you need to beat them.

  14. The new format isn’t the greatest. There really isn’t a need for a 6th seed in baseball but it isn’t going backwards so is what it is I guess.

  15. Between this and the universal DH, this has been a dark era for the National League.

  16. The byes reward consistent teams while the wildcard rewards hot teams, and is always decided in the last week because a hot team went on a heater. There is basically no break so the hot teams stay hot. If there was a week break between season ending and the post season, I guarantee this would not be the case.
