It’s always good having a vacuum cleaner for a first baseman. I immediately missed that when Tex retired – all you had to do was get the ball near him and it was as good as caught.
I’m sure Cubs fans can attest to this as well but it’s not just Rizzo’s defense at First Base that makes him a huge difference maker on that side of the ball.
It’s remarkable how often a pitcher will be struggling and you will think to yourself “man, someone needs to go out and talk to him” and then the camera cuts to Rizzo jogging over to the mound to calm the guy down. Or a player will make an error and Rizzo is the first one there coaching them up and encouraging them. He has one of the best baseball IQs I’ve ever seen and it’s really hard to replace having a manager on the field.
